What is a study visa?
A study visa (sometimes called a student visa or long-term education visa) is an official document that allows you to live in a foreign country for the duration of your academic programme. It grants legal permission to attend a school, university, or training institution abroad.
Some study visas also allow limited work rights during your stay and may open the door to post-study work opportunities or even permanent residence.
Who needs a study visa?
You will typically need a long-stay study visa if:
- Your course is longer than 90 days
- You’re studying at a university, college, language school, or vocational institution abroad
- Your country of study requires a student visa for South African citizens (which most do)
Even if you’re on a full scholarship, a visa is still required.

What documents do you need for a study visa?
Although each country has specific requirements, you’ll typically need the following:
- A valid passport
- Proof of acceptance from an accredited institution (Letter of Admission)
- Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements or sponsor letter)
- Accommodation arrangements
- Medical insurance (where required)
- Police clearance certificate
- Completed visa application forms
- Visa fees and proof of payment
- Some countries also require translations and apostilles
Many destinations also require you to prove your ties to South Africa and your intention to return after your studies.
Can I work while studying abroad?
Yes, in most cases. Depending on the country and visa type, students are often allowed to:
- Work part-time (typically up to 20 hours per week during term and full-time during holidays)
- Do internships or practical placements
- Apply for a post-study work visa after graduation
We can advise on the work rights included with your student visa and what options are available after your course ends.
